OVERVIEW

Tom found us in 2018 while scrolling through Instagram. At the time, he was in the process of selling his London home because he felt that the money could be put to better use. Having rented up until then, he felt financially and psychologically drained by the mortgage and upkeep and decided to invest some of the money from the sale into our three-property package.

We quizzed him about his somewhat unconventional decision to sell his home in search of better returns in Leeds.

WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS INVESTMENT?

Ultimately, I was looking for security. Investing in 3 properties in Leeds felt like a “safe” investment. I knew I would still be on the sacred property ladder – just with properties in Leeds, that I wasn’t living in. Of course, I’d have to rent in London, but I’d have no responsibility for that place and still have extra income on the side. I’ve now got 2 houses with Lifestyle’s help – the third is in the works as we speak and the best part is that if one of them isn’t rented, the mortgage still gets paid by the other 2, so I never have to worry about dipping into my salary! I see the properties like little insurance policies, so if I lost my job, the properties would pay for themselves and give me a nice income on the side.

I feel like I don’t have to be so frugal with my spending now, which is very freeing. Having these investments makes me feel like I can go out and enjoy my life without being tied down to a big mortgage, and it’s really important to me to live my life now, while I’m young, single and free. I have a lot of friends in Europe and to them, renting rather than owning is the norm. It’s only in England where the dream is to own a big house – and then a bigger house: I’m breaking free from all of that and it feels like a weight has been lifted!

WHAT DREW YOU TO INVESTING IN LEEDS?

I’d noticed house prices in the area I lived beginning to stagnate, so I thought I’d sell my place before things got worse. I made a tidy profit on the sale and decided to get that money to work for me by investing it in Leeds. 

WERE YOU PUT OFF BY INVESTING SO FAR UP NORTH?

Not at all – the place I owned in London was quite old and run down – In Leeds, I’ve been able to buy 3 properties with the same money! They are better quality properties and the upkeep is a lot less, so a lot of the financial pressure has been lifted. The capital appreciation is also something to look forward to in the future. It’s all quite exciting and the investments make me feel better about life – like I’m doing something outside of my day job and it’s something that’s going to be beneficial for me in the long run.

In fact, my parents have noticed that I’m actually happier since selling my house and investing in Leeds. I feel like I’ve finally got a bit more freedom to live the life that I want to.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE ABOUT LIFESTYLE’S SERVICE?

I’ve got a regular 9 to 5 job, so what I value most is the hands-off service they provided. I haven’t had to think a lot about any of the normal issues you get with buying and renovating properties. I only really hear about something when I need to sign it off, which is testament to the team that do all the work in the background.

It’s amazing that everything is done for me and I don’t need to be running up and down the motorway every few weeks. I know I’ve saved a lot of time and money than if I were doing this myself. 

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT OUR SERVICE THAT IMPRESSED YOU THE MOST?

Everything was delivered to me in a straightforward manner with content that was quick and easy to digest. I never felt lost or in the dark throughout the process and I always felt like I had all the information to hand to make the decisions I needed to make.

It’s an efficient system and I love that everyone at Lifestyle is always “on it” – there are teams at multi-million pound companies who aren’t as on it as the Lifestyle team are.

The WhatsApp group chats with the team also helped – on busy days, I could just glance at my phone and fire back a response or question – I didn’t have to go to the trouble to find a meeting room at work to take a phone call or spend ages typing up an email response.   

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS INVESTMENT EXPERIENCE

I didn’t have any previous experience outside of owning my own home and had never owned a buy-to-let property. However, I felt like my residential mortgage was really weighing me down and I needed to break free. I was constantly anxious about the possibility of losing my job and that wasn’t the life that I wanted for myself. 

WHY WAS INVESTING IN PROPERTY IMPORTANT TO YOU?

I managed to buy my London home with the help of some inheritance funds from a late aunt. She was really close to me and I didn’t want to squander that money recklessly. When I sold the property, I wanted to ensure that I protected that money and so investing in Leeds felt like the right thing to do to honour my aunt’s legacy. I feel that my aunty would have been proud of me and what I’m doing. That money has an emotional element attached to it and I want to use it wisely. 

WHO ELSE CAN BENEFIT FROM YOUR DECISION TO INVEST IN LEEDS?

If, one day, I decide to have kids, I could pass these properties down to them, but really I’d like to leave something behind for my aunt’s sons – just as she did for me. It’s changed my life completely! 

DID YOU HAVE ANY HESITATIONS ABOUT INVESTING?

My only concern was whether Lifestyle, as a company, was really able to offer me the kind of returns they were quoting! I did my due diligence, reading reviews and having conversations with the founder, and I got a good feeling from them.

I didn’t feel like I was going to be stitched up – it’s a lot of money at the end of the day, but they really knew their stuff and the trust came naturally
