Ajul & Roshni Shah had been thinking about purchasing a Buy to Let (BTL) property for a while. After conducting hours of research and learning as much as they could about investing in property, they stumbled upon our page on social media and approached us to help them get their first one.

6 months later, they’re now the proud new owners of a 2 bedroom town house in South Leeds, and we talked to them about their experience taking their first steps into property.

WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS INVESTMENT?

We were lucky enough to have some cash ready to invest and wanted to start putting things in place for our future. Our main goal was to create a retirement plan where we wouldn’t have to worry about income at that age, so we were looking for something that would provide long-term financial stability.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

For Roshni, the importance of financial security was instilled in her from an early age, so it’s really important to her that we start creating that now to protect our lifestyle and give us options in the future. I (Ajul) work very long hours as an investment banker, and I’m well aware that I’m trading my time now for financial rewards in the future. However, over time, I want the needle to swing the other way, allowing me the freedom to do what I want to do.

WHAT INVESTMENT EXPERIENCE DID YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU BEGAN WORKING WITH LIFESTYLE PROPERTY PEOPLE?

We had a little bit – we both work in the financial sector, so we have a lot invested in stocks and shares – but we don’t have much experience beyond that. Ajul had rented out his old flat several years ago, but that was a very different experience to purchasing a property outside of London and purely for investment purposes.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE OUR SERVICE?

We had a number of conversations with you before we decided to invest with Lifestyle Property People, and we got a good feeling about the business. By the time we made our choice, we both had the confidence and trust that you would do what you said you would. You were completely transparent throughout the process and we really appreciated that – even when small challenges arose, as inevitably they would, you always worked with us to achieve the best outcome for us. The team was also super responsive and we were impressed with how well informed you kept us throughout the process.

We actually built a financial model of the process in Excel and once the service was complete, we were amazed that the total costs came in within 1% of your initial Property Appraisal. We didn’t really think you would be quite so “on the money”, so that really impressed us too!

WERE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS?

We freed up so much of our time – Lifestyle Property People took care of everything for us. If we’d tried to do it all ourselves, it would have taken us far longer and taken up so much of our valuable time.

We’re planning on getting married later this year and without Lifestyle Property People, we would never have had the time to plan the wedding and buy a BTL property.

It helped too that we also really liked everyone we interacted with throughout the process – at Lifestyle Property People and all the partners you used.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO INVEST OUTSIDE OF LONDON?

We’d planned to invest in the North from the outset, Roshni studied in Nottingham and I was raised in the North, so we were both comfortable investing outside of London.

We also knew that the scope for growth in the North was far greater than in London and, importantly, purchasing in Leeds would allow us to invest in several properties, diversifying our investment pot.

Although the rent in London is higher, because we can buy 3 properties in Leeds for every 1 in London, the return on investment is a lot higher. Our plan is to eventually build a portfolio of properties, and the North is definitely the best place for us to do that.

DID YOU GET WHAT YOU WANTED FROM THE SERVICE?

There were some minor things – like a radon test that got lost in the mail during COVID, but overall it was an excellent experience.
