Today we catch up with Jemini and Richard. Working and living in Singapore, they wanted to invest in the UK property market to provide ultimate security for when they eventually returned to the UK.

We spoke to them to discuss their choice to invest in Leeds with Lifestyle Property People.

THE BACKGROUND

Jemini & Richard grew up in the UK but have been based in Singapore for the last few years. They had been following us on Facebook for a number of months before deciding to get in touch and started their investment journey with us in 2019. They considered property to be a far safer bet than stocks and shares, and recalled that as teenagers, their parents had drummed into them the benefits of a bricks and mortar investment.

We were looking to build a portfolio in the UK to provide additional security at home – and yes, we still consider it our home even though we’re living the expat life in Singapore,” Jemini explained.

THE WHY

Jemini and Richard’s plans are quite flexible and they don’t know when they’ll move back to the UK, but they want to be earning money in two countries, to hedge against fluctuations in the exchange rate.

Jemini admitted: “Although Singapore is excellent, we know we’ll eventually retire in the UK, so it’s good for us to have our investments there. We think of Singapore as our way to earn money and the UK as our bank account to hold and grow money.

The couple also like that the properties offer a bit of security for them and their families – their parents, for example, could benefit from the income as they get older. Jemini and Richard don’t have kids yet but if they do in the future then the income from the properties could also contribute to their their future – “even potentially provide them with somewhere to live, if it gets really difficult to buy” added Richard.

THE PROCESS

For Richard, the most memorable part of the investment process was the call he got from our property finder, Jayne.

She gave us a ring as soon as she had seen the property and she was really transparent and honest about what we might like and might not like about it. She explained how close the motorway was, about the good schools in the area and all the stats. She answered all our questions and made us understand the advantages, not just of investing in Leeds but specifically in the area that the property was located. We said ‘yes’ to the property and after it was refurbished, we got a tenant pretty much immediately – it was exceptional value for what we paid.

The couple liked that there was someone to oversee the whole process and that the team were responsive throughout. They reported that the communication they had with every single member of the team was brilliant and the service felt tailored to them.

We were so looked after that it almost felt like we were your only client. It really felt like a smooth, family-run operation, even though we knew it was actually just a well-oiled team. We really trusted them and everything just worked so well,” Richard said.

Jemini was impressed that the refurbishment works cost less than the estimate, and that they got an unexpected refund for the difference. “That was a nice touch” she remarked.

THE RESULTS

Richard explained that the he and Jemini initially decided to go ahead with the investment because “the numbers just made sense”. When we eventually sourced them a property, the numbers were even better than expected, so it was just a no brainer. He said: “We were more than happy with Lifestyle’s service and are keen to use it again.

Jemini and Richard can now take the passive income they get from their two properties and reinvest it to expand their portfolio, and provide ultimate security for the long term.

The Leeds property also acts as a buffer for if the London property is empty and they need some additional funds to pay the mortgage. We’re currently in talks with them about their next investments – so watch this space!
