We met Stef back in 2017, when she stumbled across our Facebook advert and signed up to attend our Property Investment Accelerator event. She already had a few buy-to-let properties across England, namely in Stoke-on-Trent, Lewisham, Liverpool and Manchester. She purchased one property in Leeds that was sourced, purchased, refurbished and rented by Lifestyle Property People and is currently purchasing her second.

WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS INVESTMENT?

As part of my divorce settlement, I had come into a bit of money, but at the time, I was really revolted by it and couldn’t bring myself to spend it. Then I started thinking that I could make it work for me and use it to rebuild my life – after all, the bills still needed to be paid and there wasn’t anyone else to look after us. I knew property would provide long term security, but I couldn’t afford to invest in London with the money I had at the time, so finding the Lifestyle team was a real gift.

WHAT DID YOU GET OUT OF INVESTING?

Money, security and the possibility of bringing strong girls into the world. If I hadn’t invested, I might not be as relaxed as I am right now about paying my bills. It’s given me peace of mind and a sense of security. I don’t have much stress and I’m living my life according to my values, but property investment requires patience – it’s a marathon not a sprint.

DID YOU HAVE ANY HESITATIONS ABOUT INVESTING IN LEEDS?

Not at all. When I met the Lifestyle team, I really got a good energy from them – I felt that they were trustworthy and had integrity. They offered to do city tours of Leeds which was very reassuring for me. It was just really easy to communicate with them.

WHICH CHARACTERISTIC OF LIFESTYLE PROPERTY PEOPLE'S SERVICE DID YOU MOST VALUE?

Patience and availability – my calls and emails were always answered straight away, and they have been available whenever I wanted to speak to them – even years later. The processes in place are efficient and the team is made up of really nice people who make the purchasing process as easy as possible.

HOW DID INVESTING FIT WITH YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS?

I had been married for 20 years and had stopped working straight after I had the kids, at the age of 36; I was very clear from day one that my daughters (aged 10 and 13) were my highest priority and I wanted to raise them, rather than handing them off to a babysitter.

As a result, after my divorce, I was a bit lost but knew that I needed to make the money work for me and create an income stream from it. I didn’t have much of a pension either, so I knew I had to take action. I discovered that I could invest in property while still being a full-time mum and jumped straight into it. Property offered us an income, something to go towards my pension and also something I could leave behind as a legacy to my girls.

HOW HAS THIS HELPED YOU?

As a mum, I devoted my life to my children and became a homemaker. I wasn’t out working, earning and contributing to society in the same way that many others are, so sometimes it left me feeling a bit empty inside. Investing in property has helped to give me a purpose and a sense of self-worth – I’m contributing to the economy by hiring the various teams of people to deliver the service, and the homemaker in me is also fulfilled as I’m giving people a comfortable and safe place to live in.

WHO ELSE HAS BENEFITED?

My daughters! My goal has always been to raise strong girls, and not only has this given me more time with them, but I’m also teaching them about investing in property. I’m showing them there is more than one way to live your life – it doesn’t have to be the standard 9-5, and contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be hard and stressful.

By investing in property, I still have my time and I have money coming in every month, even if I’m sick or away on holiday. I’ve now learned that property investors make money while they sleep, but what stops most people from investing is the fear caused by lack of expertise.
