The couple had been following the company on Facebook for a number of months before making the decision to invest and already owned one buy-to-let (BTL) in London. We wanted to earn money in two countries to hedge against the exchange rate.

Jemini & Richard grew up in the UK but have been based in Singapore for the last few years. The couple had been following the company on Facebook for a number of months before making the decision to invest and already owned one buy-to-let (BTL) in London. In 2019, they invested in Leeds with Lifestyle Property People and are now considering investing again.

We wanted to earn money in two countries to hedge against the exchange rate.

WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE WITH THIS INVESTMENT?

We don’t yet know when we’ll move back to the UK, so on one level, and from an expat point of view, we want to be earning money in two countries, as having assets in the UK hedges against the exchange rate.

We want to use the passive income we get from the properties to invest in more properties and build our assets to provide ultimate security for the long term. Also, if our London property is unrented then the Leeds portfolio can contribute to the mortgage. Although Singapore is excellent, we know we’ll eventually retire in the UK, so it’s good for us to have investments there. We think of Singapore as our way to earn the cash and the UK as our bank account to hold the cash.

WHY WERE YOU INTERESTED IN INVESTING IN PROPERTY OUTSIDE OF LONDON?

I grew up in York and so I’ve always been quite North-centric. Leeds was always on our radar and we’d been looking to invest in properties that were either in northern towns or university towns – Leeds ticked both boxes.

WHAT ELSE DREW YOU TO LEEDS?

We went for this investment because the numbers that Lifestyle presented just made sense and the particular property that we purchased had really great transport links to the rest of the UK. Investing in Leeds just felt right for us. With the one property in London, we’re just diversifying our portfolio and we knew that if anything went wrong, my parents live an hour’s drive away, so they can help us sort things.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE ABOUT LIFESTYLE’S SERVICE?

You got us a property that was exceptional. What really sticks in our minds was the call we got from your property finder. She gave us a ring as soon as she’d seen the property and told us everything she knew about it – she was really transparent and honest about what we might like or might not like. She explained how close the motorway was, about the good schools in the area and all the stats.

Lifestyle really had all the answers to our questions. She made us understand the advantages not just of investing in Leeds but in the area that the property was located. We said yes to the property and after it was refurbished, we got a tenant pretty much immediately – it was exceptional value for what we paid.

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT OUR SERVICE THAT IMPRESSED YOU THE MOST?

Richard: The communication with every single member of the team was brilliant and the service was tailored to us. We were so looked after that it almost felt like we were your only client, and it felt like a smooth, family-run operation, even though we know it is just a well-oiled team. We really trusted you and everything just worked so well.

Jemini: What was also brilliant was the refurbishment works cost less than the estimate, so you gave us a rebate for the difference – that was a nice touch. We liked that there was someone to oversee the whole process and they were responsive throughout. Even when Shiv was on holiday, he responded to our message straight away and sorted things out for us.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS INVESTMENT EXPERIENCE

We already had one BTL in London and some stocks and shares, but generally the stock market is a bit alien to us, and we consider property a far safer bet. Growing up, our parents hammered into us that bricks and mortar is a good investment, and we were looking to build a portfolio in the UK to provide additional security at home – and yes, we still consider it our home even though we’re living the expat life in Singapore.

WHO ELSE WILL BENEFIT FROM YOUR PROPERTY INVESTMENTS?

Our families. On one hand the properties provide security for us but on the other hand they are security for our families too – our parents, for example, will benefit from the income as they get older. We don’t have any kids yet but if we do in the future then these properties will go towards their future – even potentially provide them with somewhere to live if it gets really difficult to buy. We can also teach them about investing in property and why we did it.
